    There is no single set of TikTok ad specs. An Auction In-Feed Non-Spark upload, a Spark Ads Pull post, a Reservation In-Feed asset, and a TikTok Ad Network video can accept different durations, formats, bitrates, and safe-zone treatments. A file that passes one route can still be wrong for another. We audited five video-creative routes using TikTok's official advertiser documentation, checked September 4, 2026. Across the audited upload routes, 9:16, 16:9, and 1:1 are the recurring aspect ratios; 500 MB is the documented ceiling for the main non-Spark and Ad Network video uploads; and duration ranges from 5–60 seconds for Reservation Non-Spark or Spark Push to as long as 10 minutes for Auction Non-Spark and TikTok Ad Network video. Spark Pull inherits the restrictions of the organic post rather than a separate upload specification. The practical conclusion is simple: identify the buying and identity route before exporting. “TikTok-ready” is not a file specification.

    The five audited creative routes

    RouteRatio / dimensionsDurationFile ceilingKey distinction
    Auction In-Feed Non-Spark9:16 ≥540×960 recommended; 16:9 ≥960×540; 1:1 ≥640×640Up to 10 minutes500 MBDirect creative upload with ≥516 kbps bitrate
    Auction In-Feed Spark PullExisting TikTok postNo separate restrictionNot separately statedCreative inherits the successfully published organic post
    Reservation In-Feed Non-Spark / Spark Push9:16 ≥540×960 recommended; 16:9 ≥960×540; 1:1 ≥640×6405–60 seconds; 9–15 recommended500 MB≥2,500 kbps and reservation-specific safe-zone files
    Reservation In-Feed Spark PullExisting TikTok postNo separate restrictionNot separately statedPulls the organic post instead of uploading a new ad file
    TikTok Ad Network video1280×720; 720×1280; 720×720Up to 10 minutes500 MBSupports interstitial, rewarded, app-open, native, and banner inventory

    This table exposes two common errors. First, the widely repeated 5–60-second rule belongs to the Reservation Non-Spark / Spark Push path in the cited page; TikTok's current Auction Non-Spark page states up to 10 minutes. Second, Spark Ads Pull should not be treated as another uploaded asset with the same constraints. TikTok says there are no separate restrictions as long as the video has already been successfully uploaded to the app.

    03

    Auction In-Feed Non-Spark specs

    TikTok's Auction In-Feed documentation recommends vertical 9:16 at 540×960 pixels or higher. It also accepts horizontal 16:9 at 960×540 or higher and square 1:1 at 640×640 or higher. Supported file formats are MP4, MOV, MPEG, 3GP, and AVI. The video can run up to 10 minutes, the file must be 500 MB or less, and bitrate must be at least 516 kbps.

    The page also constrains captions. Non-Spark captions use TikTok's white font, cannot be customized, and do not support clickable links, @ symbols, or hashtags. That makes on-screen composition and the native caption separate systems. Important product names, prices, or model numbers should not be placed where either the interface or the caption can cover them.

    Use this route when the ad account uploads a purpose-built creative rather than promoting an existing organic post. Exporting a 9:16 MP4 is a sensible default, but it does not finish the job: the safe zone changes with caption length and add-ons.

    04

    Spark Pull and Spark Push are different production jobs

    TikTok ad buying and identity routes compared as separate file contracts
    TikTok ad buying and identity routes compared as separate file contracts

    Source: TapVid public research dataset; verified 2026-09-04.

    Spark Ads Pull uses an existing TikTok post. The Auction page says the caption is extracted from the organic video caption and a maximum of four lines can display. The file is normally MP4 or MOV, and there is no separate duration restriction beyond successful organic publishing.

    Spark Ads Push sits in the uploaded-creative path in TikTok's Reservation documentation. It shares the 5–60-second duration, three documented ratios, 500 MB ceiling, and ≥2,500 kbps bitrate with Non-Spark Reservation assets.

    The naming difference matters because “Spark” alone does not tell an editor which file contract applies. A production request should specify Pull or Push, Auction or Reservation, and whether the source has already been published organically.

    05

    Reservation In-Feed specs

    For Non-Spark and Spark Push Reservation In-Feed ads, TikTok documents:

    • vertical 9:16 at 540×960 pixels or higher, recommended;
    • horizontal 16:9 at 960×540 or higher;
    • square 1:1 at 640×640 or higher;
    • MP4, MOV, MPEG, or 3GP;
    • 5–60 seconds, with 9–15 seconds recommended;
    • 500 MB or less;
    • at least 2,500 kbps.

    Do not convert the 9–15-second recommendation into a rejection rule. The accepted duration on the cited page is broader. Keeping “accepted” and “recommended” in separate dataset columns prevents a creative guideline from becoming a false technical limit.

    06

    TikTok safe zones are inputs, not one fixed rectangle

    TikTok says the safe zone depends on the canvas dimension, caption length, and use of additional formats. Reservation documentation also distinguishes standard left-to-right, Arabic right-to-left, and anchor versions. The Auction page warns that preview and live rendering can differ slightly because preview is not device-specific.

    Therefore, a single set of pixel margins copied from a blog post is not a durable safe-zone specification. The safer workflow is:

    1. Select the exact ad route and ratio. 2. Download the corresponding current safe-zone file from TikTok. 3. Choose the caption length and interactive add-ons before final layout. 4. Keep the logo, product, price, supers, and CTA inside the applicable protected area. 5. Preview the real asset using TikTok's advertising preview tool.

    This is particularly important for product videos. A product image can be visually intact and still become unusable if the model number or CTA sits under the interface. Accuracy includes the relationship between the approved asset, the literal text, and the final placement.

    07

    TikTok Ad Network is not the TikTok feed

    TikTok Ad Network, formerly Pangle, distributes creative across interstitial, rewarded, app-open, native, and banner formats. Its official asset page lists three video resolutions: 1280×720, 720×1280, and 720×720. Video can run up to 10 minutes in MP4, MOV, MPEG, or AVI with a 500 MB ceiling.

    The page recommends supplying all resolutions so the system can use more ad formats. It also asks the advertiser to select a thumbnail; if none is selected, the first video frame becomes the thumbnail. That makes the first frame part of delivery quality, not merely the start of playback.

    Do not apply TikTok Ad Network dimensions to a TikTok Auction In-Feed upload or vice versa. The platforms share ownership and tooling, but the inventory and documented asset contracts differ.

    A production checklist that survives route changes

    How to use the TikTok ad specs audit without replacing final Ads Manager preview

    Create one source pack containing the approved product images, logo, exact copy, offer, pricing, legal language, CTA, and destination. Then create a route matrix:

    DecisionRecord before export
    Buying routeAuction, Reservation, or TikTok Ad Network
    Identity routeNon-Spark, Spark Pull, or Spark Push
    Placement and ratio9:16, 16:9, 1:1, or Ad Network resolution
    Acceptance limitsDuration, format, size, bitrate
    Presentation limitsSafe-zone file, caption length, anchor/add-on, LTR or RTL
    Review proofPreview screenshot and final uploaded asset ID

    This matrix also makes batch production safer. The source truth remains stable while rendering rules vary by route. TapVid is built for asset-led explainer production: approved product assets and copy stay inspectable, and the video can be adapted without granting permission to redraw the product or rewrite the offer. Always review the actual TikTok preview before launch.

    We identified materially different video-creative routes in TikTok's public advertiser documentation and recorded one row per route. The audit used only first-party TikTok pages. Fields were transcribed as accepted settings, recommendations, or not separately stated; missing values were not inferred from another route.

    The sources were checked September 4, 2026. The Auction In-Feed page showed a June 2026 update, the Reservation page showed a July 2025 update, and the TikTok Ad Network page showed a September 2026 update. The dataset is Version 1.0 and uses the source wording where a rule depends on successful organic upload.

    10

    Limitations

    This is a point-in-time documentation audit, not an upload test. Availability can vary by account, market, objective, placement, and rollout status. TikTok can change a live page without preserving the prior rule. The preview tool warns that real rendering can vary across devices and browsers. We did not audit TopView, every regional policy, music licensing, commerce-specific products, or creative acceptance policy.

    Use the dataset to plan an export, then verify the current official page and actual Ads Manager preview immediately before launch.

    Frequently asked questions

    What are the recommended TikTok ad dimensions?

    For Auction and Reservation Non-Spark In-Feed video, TikTok recommends 9:16 at 540×960 pixels or higher. It also documents 16:9 at 960×540 or higher and 1:1 at 640×640 or higher. TikTok Ad Network uses a separate resolution list.

    What is the maximum TikTok ad file size?

    The audited Auction Non-Spark, Reservation Non-Spark / Spark Push, and TikTok Ad Network video routes document a 500 MB ceiling. Do not assume that figure applies to every TikTok product or an existing Spark Pull post.

    How long can a TikTok video ad be?

    It depends on the route. Auction Non-Spark and TikTok Ad Network video can run up to 10 minutes on the cited pages. Reservation Non-Spark / Spark Push accepts 5–60 seconds and recommends 9–15 seconds. Spark Pull inherits the successfully published organic post rather than a separate ad-upload duration.

    Is there one TikTok safe zone?

    No. TikTok says the safe zone varies with ratio, caption length, and additional formats. Reservation assets also distinguish anchor and LTR/RTL templates. Download the matching current template and preview the final asset.
